A Little Child Shall Lead

Reflecting on Isaiah 11:6
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.”

This text fell into my mind as I finished gathering material for my life book. I was thinking about the way that remembering my childhood-self has helped me to regain a healed sense of self in a post-menopausal landscape. And how all of the trials and joys of the past are being brought together peaceably within me in the process. I kind of wanted to keep going with wolf, goat, leopard and calf, but decided in the end to let the lion and lamb represent the whole menagerie. As I decided this I remembered that lion and lamb are both metaphors used for Jesus, and that seemed apt.

A Little Child Shall Lead

Lead the way child,
lead the way,
the lion walks beside you.
Rending days are done,
your friend the Sun
is smiling bright
upon you.

Walk your path child,
walk your path,
the lamb is close
beside you.
Your gentleness
is wrapped in wool
and held
in lover’s hands.
