Winter gloom

Using a roll of Harman Phoenix II film in the low winter light has left me feeling slightly gloomy. Well, only slightly, because I’m delighted with the imagery I’ve seen through the lens…

Walking around Deer Hill reservoir; we took a picnic and sat beside the flowers and thistles.

Coming down into the valley and walking along the canal, we found life in the middle of decay.

Walking around the Colne Valley takes us along steep sided paths and roads. The railway cuts a horizontal line and the rest of us weave up and down.

As the sun sets, the darkness falls. Fire in the sky, white lines along the road.

The last gasp of sunlight on a winter afternoon. The film captured the shape of the hills and the way the sun shines over some and along the valley of others. Comparing this to a photograph taken with my mobile phone at the same time, I could see a much greater dynamic range in the digital image. It will have taken multiple shots and overlaid them. It was then that I realised that my mobile phone photographs are more documentary than art.
