The Reluctant Anchorite escapes
her cell on a ladder
built from letters
On angular rungs
her dark-bound feet climb
for tea
and pre-dawn light
Only the blesséd
insomniac
and ten-thousand birds
witness the Sun
anoint her temples
This celebration of writing was penned during a 4am insomnia session. I was deep into writing my life book (from which the Reluctant Anchorite persona arose) and was so excited about the project that my sleep was affected. I scribbled this down in the back of my journal, after drinking peppermint tea in the garden and watching the sun rise. Afterwards I managed to sleep again, completely forgetting this poem until I came across it a month later when reaching the end of my journal.
