Wolf Cleugh

Within sight of Groverake Lead Mine, which closed in 1999, is Wolf Cleugh (or Wolfcleugh). We had a Church in the Wild meeting point there earlier this year, and I was struck by the way a terraced row of miner’s cottages had begun to collapse from one end. The slowest domino run ever. I returned with some black and white film and my little Pentax to enjoy the way the winds and doors frame both interior and exterior photographs.

There are so many opportunities to capture Nature’s patient and artistic work in the form of rural decay.

I think there was a overall brightness to the day which led me to underexpose my images. I will probably return here and try again on a slightly less glorious day of sunshine. All photographs taken with Pentax MX, SMC 50mm f1.4, and Ilford HP5 black & white 35mm film. Copyright © 2026, Graeme Holdsworth, all rights reserved.
