The VeloClub 167 is the north of England’s premier cycling club, and regularly wins the club championship for national long distance events. Named after the A167: the old “great north road” from the Angel pub in Topcliffe to the Angel of the North, in Tyneside.
Some of us no longer live in the proper north, some of us live as far south as Yorkshire. So we decided to have a social meet up and speak of southern things like Sheffield Steel and Woollen Mills.
Ride route: Anywhere to Bank View Cafe in Langsett.
Date: Saturday 2nd March 2024
What’s On: Coffee & Cake from 11am to 1pm
Mike Wigley, ex-MemSec of Audax UK, Peak Audax Organiser, and ancien of The VeloClub 167 met up with me in Slaithwaite. We rode the valleys from Huddersfield to New Mill, paused to honour the memory of John Radford, and then the A616 to Bank View Cafe. Climbing in the drizzle of March rain, through snow banked roads, and enjoying the wide vista of Peak District snow fields.
Andy rode from Sheffield. Graham drove from Hull, Eddie and Jane drove from Bury. We teased Graham for driving, but gave Eddie and Jane a much easier time. Cake was consumed and friendships made, renewed.
The downhill return to West Yorkshire was wet and cold, but Mike and I eased the pace by wandering back along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
Next VC167 South Social: Tuesday 25th June. Location TBC.
