Power to Weight Ratio

Black and white photography on a Pentax MX camera with Kodak 400 TMax.

I don’t run a power meter on my bicycle, but Strava makes estimates based on heart rate, pace and ascent. On the rare occasions I ‘leave it all on the road’, such as a 10 mile time trial, I probably have a power to weight ratio of five watts per kilogram.

5 W/kg

Fat tyres, disc brakes, full suspension and a steel frame. The Suzuki SV650 weighs about 197kg and I really need the assistance an engine provides. The 645cc v-twin engine turns out about 74hp, well over 55,000 watts.

280 W/kg
